Universal Arts Festival Fringe opens on the Thursday before the first Fringe weekend and runs for 25 days ending on the Sunday with a possible dark day in the middle of the festival. We prioritise the programming of companies who come for the duration of the festival, however it is possible to perform for 12 days only.
We aim to bring outstanding international theatre, dance and music to the New Town Theatre and outstanding solo theatre to the Fringe's oldest operating venue – Hill Street Solo Theatre.
New Town Theatre is situated at 96 George Street. It is the beautifully and lavishly decorated Freemasons Hall built in 1912. We create four well-equipped and comfortable theatres within the building. Situated 300m from the Assembly Rooms and 300m from the International Book Festival, it is ideally placed in the city centre. Click here for full details.
Hill Street Theatre is the oldest Fringe venue constantly in operation (40 years, 25 under Universal Arts). Situated in the city centre, just round the corner from George Street, it is a two-minute walk from New Town Theatre and three minutes from the Assembly Rooms and the International Book Festival. The venue is dedicated to Solo Theatre, One Person Shows, Monodrama or One Actor Theatre. For full information please click here.
We also present performances in other venues and site-specific spaces, working with artists and companies to choose the most appropriate setting for their work. We regularly present performances in the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, Edinburgh University and previously we have utilised toilets, courtyards, tents and a kitchen.
